Hurricane Season
In the Northern Atlantic Ocean, a distinct hurricane season occurs from1 June to 30 November, sharply peaking from late August through September. The statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is 10 September.
Tropical cyclones cause large waves, heavy rain, and high winds with up to
190 mph in some hurricanes. On land, strong winds can damage or destroy vehicles, buildings, bridges, and other outside objects, turning loose debris into deadly flying projectiles.
During a hurricane watch it is important to listen regularly to the radio or television to listen for instructions. If officials announce a hurricane warning, they may ask that people leave their homes as soon as possible to be safe.
